Ben was raised in rural south-central Kansas outside the town of Goddard, Kansas. Ben worked his way through college at Wichita State University where he graduated magna cum laude with a major in Political Science and a minor in History. At Georgetown, Ben investigated all aspects of criminal cases for indigent defendants in the District of Columbia and gained early exposure to litigation assisting trial counsel in all aspects of trial preparation as well as giving testimony before the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. It was in his work at Georgetown that Ben came face to face with stark examples of poverty, racism and injustice in America. As a result of the experience, Ben committed himself to becoming an attorney to fight for social justice.
After graduating from Wichita State, Ben moved to Lawrence, Kansas to attend the University of Kansas, School of Law, where he was a Dean James Green Scholar. Ben participated in the Paul E. Wilson Defender Project at KU, an innocence project where he worked on all aspects of post-conviction litigation and authored a direct appeal to the Kansas Court of Appeals. At KU, Ben received several honors including, the James P. Mize Trial Advocacy Award and a CALI Award for Advanced Litigation. Since graduation, Ben has continued coursework in trial advocacy by participating in the Ross T. Roberts Inns of Court trial skills program.
While in law school Ben learned his most important development of advocacy skills through his work at Douthit Frets Rouse Gentile & Rhodes, LLC. Ben was a law clerk at DFRGR from the end of his first year of law school until graduation. Under the guidance of Evan Douthit, Doug Gentile and Randy Rhodes he immediately began working on cases representing people and the families of people, who were seriously injured or killed as a result of defective products and negligent conduct.
